Grimes Public Library Coronavirus Protection

Here’s what we are doing the week of March 30th:

We will be doing three Take Out Service Days during the week of Monday, March 30th  through Friday, April 3.

Take Out Service will be on the following three dates:

Monday, March 30 –  4pm to 6pm

Wednesday, April 1 – 4pm to 6pm

Friday, April 3 – 4pm to 6pm

Please place your holds before noon on the day/s you wish to pick your holds up.

To limit staff’s exposure to people, we will be checking the item/s out for you , putting your name on the item/s, and placing the items outside the library by the front door during the 4pm to 6pm pick-up time.

Here’s what we are doing the week of March 23rd:

Monday –

Staff will be at the library Monday for takeout service from 10AM to 1PM.
Please place your hold online. Staff will pull all holds before 10AM.  Holds placed after 10AM will not be available for pick up until Friday’s Takeout service. Staff will then call you when the hold is available.  When you have arrived in our parking lot, please call 515-986-3551 to let us know you have arrived.

To keep our staff safe, there is a small limited amount of staff during this time.  Your patience is greatly appreciated.

Tuesday – Thursday –

Our foyer will be open 12PM to 6PM for anyone who wishes to take a book or movie from our “free library.”  These are items that have been donated to the library and are free to take.  We do not want them back.  Should you have items at home that you feel would be of interest to others, please drop them off.  Please understand these items have not been cleaned. There is also a food bin in the foyer for anyone who would like to donate non-perishable food or household necessities to the local food bank.

Friday –

Takeout Service is back.  Hold pick up begins at 10AM and goes through 4PM.  Place your hold online at grimeslibrary.org.  Staff will pull the hold and then check it out to your account.  Staff will call you when this process is complete.  After you have received your call, please let the staff know approximately what time you will pick up your hold.  When you have arrived in our parking lot, give the library a call at 515-986-3551 to let us know you are in the parking lot.  The staff will take the hold out to your vehicle.

To keep our staff healthy, there is a very limited amount of staff working Takeout service days.  Your patience is appreciated.

Grimes Public Library Coronavirus Protection – Updated as of 3/15/20 8:30pm

Effective immediately, all programs and meeting room reservations have been canceled until further notice.

Like many of you, the Grimes Public Library administration is monitoring the most recent news about the coronavirus in order to make the best decisions possible to keep the library’s staff, patrons and community healthy and safe. We will continue to follow directions from state and local health officials, and respond as this situation develops.

At the Grimes Public Library, we value our position in the community as a source of trustworthy information and a location where the public gathers to utilize important, free tools and resources. Our core goal during this situation will be to keep the library open to support our communities and offer as many services as we can safely provide while also being proactive about taking additional steps beyond our regular practices to maintain those services.

As an added level of precaution, here are things we are doing effective immediately:

  • Removing all toys, LEGO blocks, board games, plush animals, and other interactive children’s materials from the public area.
  • Canceling maker space library programs and other programs that use a lot of shared materials. Please view our website for more information on canceled programs.
  • Increasing the level and frequency of cleaning and sanitizing the libraries and public items inside our buildings.
  • Providing for public use hand sanitizer at our circulation counter.
  • Posting signage that provides information and prevention tips inside our bathrooms as well as all bulletin boards.
  • Requiring staff to practice common preventative measures like hand washing and regularly cleaning and disinfecting surfaces.

A few things you can do to assist us:

  • Please stay home if you are not feeling well.
  • Call the library with the items you need. Staff will gather the items for you.  Then, call the library when you have arrived in the parking lot.  The library staff will run the items out to your car.

At this time, the Grimes Public Library will remain open during all regular hours, and most programming will not be affected. If you prefer not to visit the library, please go online www.grimeslibrary.org to renew your items or call 515-986-3551.  Also, please see section above A few things you can do to assist us.

Also, the Library offers a large collection of digital materials, including eBooks, eMagazines, eAudiobooks, streaming film and TV, and more, which can be accessed at any time online HERE.

We will be regularly updating our coronavirus information page with any new information.

If anything else changes in the future with regards to GPL and the services we provide, we will communicate that to our patrons immediately through this website, Facebook, and other City resources. Thank you.
